Philips Xenium 9@9a

Post

9a9Imagine this a cell phone that lets you talk for a whole day! Ten hours without charging is what they say. The Philips Xenium 9@9a is bereft of any extra bells and whistles but can hang on in standby for 40 days and 40 nights on a single charge, and even the most talkative jabberjaws in the world can go on gabbing all day, 10 hours without having to recharge the thing.Other than that advanced energy efficiency, the line of 9@9 phones are fairly ordinary. The Xenium 9@9d adds a 1.3-megapixel camera to the mix, while the 9@9t is a smartphone with handwriting recognition, an MP3 player and a miniSD memory expansion slot. But the long battery life will make it a big draw.

However, no Bluetoooth and IrDA here and just when we thought Philips is out of the cell phone market it is back with a bang.

iPhone Impersonators?

Post

iPhone impersonators are arriving and every other day now and right on the heels of the LG PRADA touch-screen handset we now have the Meizu M8. However, we can all expect many more on the horizon in the days to come. Meizu is not new to being an apple copycat but it has managed to excel in its Apple inspired products

What Meizu seem to have is a great track record of copying an Apple product then adding a feature that the original product should have had in the first place. This time they’ve given their M8 mobile phone the ability to work on both 3G and GSM.

The Meizu M8 is a personal media player/phone that will reportedly run on Windows CE. Features include a 3.3-inch screen, GSM and 3G, Bluetooth and a 3-megapixel camera capable of capturing video at a 720 x 480 resolution and 30 frames per second. We’re expecting to hear lots more about this product come the summer.

How to Block Your Cell Phone Number

Post

Sometimes you want to make your call private temporarily or have all calls block your call origin. Find out how to enhance your privacy here.

Steps

  1. There are many ways to enable call blocking. If you have an old phone, skip to step 5.
  2. First, look around for a option under your phone’s call settings menu called “Show/Hide My Number”
  3. When you select it, it will most likely be set to “network default,” which means that displaying Caller ID information would be dependent on your carrier’s network setup for your mobile number. Change it to “hide number” to have the phone ignore the network setting and stop reporting your caller ID information.
  4. Check if it works by making a test call. You may also need to turn your phone off and back on for the change to go into effect.
  5. If it doesn’t work or the option is not available, begin your call with *67, if you’re in North America. So, for example instead of dialing 1-718-555-0123 you would dial *6717185550123. If in the United Kingdom and Ireland, then dial 141.

Tips

  • If using a GSM phone/network, then dialing #31# before the number would block the caller origin for that call.
  • If you have your Caller ID info blocked permanently, then dial, *82 in the US or 1470 in the UK, to unblock it only for the next call.
  • If its not working as described, call your mobile service provider to have them walk you through what needs to be done. Just remember to emphasise to them on if you want to be able to temporarily block outgoing call info on your own or to block all outgoing caller ID info.
  • You may also contact your mobile service provider to see if they can or will block your name from being displayed and showing your location or “Wireless Caller” instead.

Warnings

  • Some carriers/phones don’t support hiding your number.
  • Blocking your number from being displayed on outgoing calls may cause difficulty getting through to certain numbers that won’t accept blocked calls or that need to recognize the incoming number, e.g. voicemail might start asking for your mobile number.
  • When calling certain toll-free numbers and emergency services your number may still be relayed despite other call blocking methods.

Verizon said iDon’t want iPhone.

Post

Ipod steve jobsVerizon Wireless, the No. 2 U.S. cellphone carrier, passed on the chance to be the exclusive distributor of the iPhone almost two years ago, balking at Apple’s rich financial terms and other demands. Apparently Apple’s first choice for exclusive iPhone service was Verizon and not Cingular! The two companies couldn’t agree on a deal that worked for both companies. “We said no.” Said Jim Gerace, a VZW VP. “We have nothing bad to say about the Apple iPhone. We just couldn’t reach a deal that was mutually beneficial.” Talks began as far back as two years ago, but Apple’s demands were steep.

Apple wanted a percentage of monthly service fees, control over distribution that would limit iPhone sales to Apple and Verizon stores, and even some control over service and support for iPhone customers. “They would have been stepping in between us and our customers to the point where we would have almost had to take a back seat … on hardware and service support,” say Gerace.

Whether consumers — who would have presumably had a fair shot at an EV-DO iPhone with Verizon as a service provider — will win in the end is yet to be seen.

Motorla SLVR L7 Review

Post

SLVR L7Members of the candybar phone set who envied the Motorola RAZR”thin is in” good looks are in luck. The Motorola SLVR L7, offered by Cingular in the US, takes the RAZR’s techno-chic design and signature polished metal keypad and flattens it into the thinnest candybar phone on the US market. The 11.5mm thin SLVR lives up to its name, being incredibly slim though not notably small in height or breadth.

The SLVR is about more than good looks, and falls into the feature phone category thanks to its VGA camera, Bluetooth and Micro SD (aka TransFlash) card slot which comes filled with a 512 meg card. Why such a high capacity card? Because the SLVR is yet another iTunes phone from Motorola and it can handle up to 100 songs. Unlike the 100 song ROKR, whose only claim to fame was its iTunes capability, the SLVR L7 more subtlely adds the feature as one of several reasons to want this phone. Much better marketing: getting a SLVR means getting a cool looking phone with decent features that also happens to replace an iPod.

BlackBerry’s now Sync with Mac

Post

Mark/Space announced this week it would soon release a version of its Mac-to-handheld synchronization software, called Mac OS X: The Missing Sync for BlackBerry, for Research In Motion’s (RIM) wireless handhelds. The Missing Sync, which often delivers a level of compatibility between handhelds and Macs not delivered by the platform or device vendors themselves, has long served as the missing link between Apple desktops and laptops and Palm OS devices.

Last year, the company added Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and Smartphones to the list of supported PDAs and handsets. A version also exists for the Sony PSP and an edition for Danger’s hiptop smartphones has been discontinued.

Sony Ericsson W810i Walkman Review

Post

EricssonA combination cell phone and music player, the Sony Ericsson W810i, the latest in the company’s Walkman phone line, delivers just about everything a gadget-lover could want. A super-small beauty, the W810i crams a lot into a surprisingly tiny package. You’ll get a music player with an external memory card, a 2-megapixel camera, and Bluetooth. This phone is only carried by Cingular at the moment, but Amazon has unlocked phones that you may be able to get activated to your service.

The W810i is a candy bar-style phone measuring only 3.9 x 1.8 x 0.8 inches and weighing in at 3.5 ounces. We love its sleek black styling and its generous cool factor; it feel like a phone for night-clubbers who know the best undiscovered places.
